The UK Picture Editors' Guild Awards 2011:
the 2011 event
Honourable Artillery Company headquarters
September 20th 2011
The presentation night, backed by major sponsors, is being held at one of London's most prestigious venues and features a formal 'black-tie' reception followed by dinner during the awards ceremony when the winners will be announced.
The UK Picture Editors' Guild is delighted to announce that BBC news presenter Kate Silverton will host the 2011 awards evening at the Honourable Artillery Company Headquarters on the 20th September.
Kate also hosted and presented the prizes at the 2010 event.
Kate has an empathy with the dedication and often dangerous work done by photographers as she has of course herself reported from the frontline in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
At this very special time for Kate and husband Michael the Guild is very grateful that she has once again taken the time to host our very special evening.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish Kate and Michael all the very best next month when their baby is due. Maybe another awarding winning photographer is about to come into the world!
Sir Harold Evans, probably the most respected living newpaperman, is to present the prizes for this year's UK Picture Editors' Guild Awards.
Harold Evans, recently appointed Editor at Large for Reuters, has a long commitment to photojournalism as an editor and writer. In 1986 the Press Photographers Association of Great Britain presented him with a battlefield camera for outstanding service to photojournalism. In 1999 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Center of Photography. In 2001, British journalists voted him the greatest all time British newspaper editor, and he was honored as one of 50 World Press Heroes on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the International Press Institute.
Evans is the author of Pictures on a Page, a former chairman of judges for the World Press Photo and of the International Center for Photography (ICP). The Royal Photographic Society honored him with the Hood Medal for his work.
Evans was editor of The Sunday Times for 14 years (1967-1981) and of The Times from 1981-2, a period described in his best seller Good Times, Bad Times. In the US, he founded Conde Nast Traveler magazine and was for seven years publisher of Random House.
He has written two critically acclaimed best-selling illustrated histories of America: The American Century, which contained 900 photographs, and They Made America, a history of innovation. His most recent book is his memoir, My Paper Chase. He has written numerous essays and introductions to photographic works, including War Stories, Shots in the Dark, Eye Witness to History, and for collections including those of Don McCullin, Snowdon, Sally Soames, Stanley Devon.
